The Greenway Foundation

Quoted by James Michener, in his book, CENTENNIAL, he called the South Platte River "A nothing of a river!" Well, fortunately there was a small group of individuals that realized that it was worth saving and that IT WAS THE ONLY RIVER IN TOWN! Plans were formulated to clean up the river, build 18 nodule parks along its banks and place a hiker/biker trail along the river through Denver and into the adjacent suburbs.

The challenge began...

Hired as the fund raising counsel for this great project, we immediately began to plan special events to get people to the river. Over 100,000 people attended the Great Relay Race, Concerts on the Green and other events we designed and implemented and began to restore the city's belief in the river.

The major corporations and foundations in Colorado generously funded the initial parks development and the construction began.

The mission of the project was to:

• clean up the water quality of the river and its tributaries
• traverse the city and suburbs along the main corridor of the river
• provide neighborhood trail connections for every tributary carrying water into the Platte
• build a bike trail along each of these waterways
• build 18 nodule interconnecting parks along the trail

The project has raised over $40 million and the bikeway system now provides interconnecting trails throughout the entire Front Range of the Rockies. The Greenway Foundation staff has continued to increase the impact of this project throughout the city and it has served as a model for waterfront projects all over the world.

The Greenway has received numerous awards for its design and unique inner city impact and the means through which the major city agencies including parks departments and water drainage entities worked together to make it happen.

We have now been hired to raise money for the Heritage Endowment that will assure future generations of this unique legacy.
